As an innovative landscape and urban planning strategic method, green infrastructure planning aims to meet sustainable urban development. However, the literature on green infrastructure (GI) is vast and complex. There is still no agreement among scholars and experts concerning the concept of green infrastructure and its application approaches. That raises the initiation for the study to identify green infrastructure concept, character, and planning principles to enhance the urban environment. The central concept and principles that green infrastructure must consider as a tool help to develop a city's green infrastructure strategies using the concept and principle. On this foundation, the study discusses the origin and characteristics of the GI concept. Moreover, it discusses different principles of GI, such as connectivity, multifunctionality, multiscale, integration, diversity, applicability, governance, and continuity.GI helps designers understand the environment in terms of aesthetics, biodiversity, and sustainability. Thus, applying green infrastructure's concept, characteristics, and principles is the infrastructural solution in landscape design to enhance the urban environment.
