Vernacular dwellings in gully region of Loess Plateau are usually composed of residential buildings and its
courtyard within courtyard walls. Under the background of new countryside construction, the eco-technology,
traditional building materials and traditional forms that are contained in the traditional dwellings have been
neglected. It leads to the traditional residential system replaced and gradually disappears. This research takes
newly built vernacular dwelling as the object. Firstly, based on the results of field investigation, this research
firstly classified the newly built vernacular dwellings into 6 types by different layout of courtyard. Secondly,
by analysis of physical environment, the characteristic of different type’s vernacular dwellings are summarized.
Thirdly, it proposes an ecological layout method of newly built vernacular dwellings. Lastly, combining with
ecological layout of vernacular dwelling, the research explored a method of ecological design by establishing
the ideal model of residential buildings. The results of this research can make up the gaps exited in the
construction of new countryside, and the gaps in ecological planning conceptions and technologies
