When a fire accident takes place in a large building, occupants must evacuate through a relatively long distance and complex interior space could interfere with evacuation. For that reason, it is necessary to use exit signage for facilitating effective evacuation. However, smoke, blackout, and other various factors limit the field of view of evacuees and lower efficiency of exit signage. In this study, vulnerability of colour-related standards for exit sign in South Korea and other countries was analysed. And a full-scale field experiment was conducted by using a translucent eye-patch in order to analyse cognitional effects of lighting hue of exit signs classified by change of smoke density.
