For over a decade, bamboo has played a crucial role as an alternative building material mentioned in the context of sustainability in the world. After the success of bamboo design and construction projects were publicly propagated, bamboo architecture became known and revived once again as a building material. The objective of this article is to study the types of completed bamboo architectural structures with the conceptual framework for figure classification of architectural structure according to guidelines set by the structure as architecture theory. A literature review related to bamboo architectural design indicated that the types of bamboo architectural structure are twofold: 1) skeleton structure, such as post and beam structure, planar truss, space truss, and portal frame; and 2) surface structure, such as geodesic dome, hyperbolic paraboloid, and space frame. In addition, it was found that structural characteristics were used in bamboo architecture with a wider span. Due to the ability and mechanical properties of bamboo to efficiently handle tensile and compressive strength, bamboo may be used as building material for wide span structures as well.
