Abstract

With the increasing concern for sustainable development in China, many people are seeking wisdom from traditional culture. In recent years, China is experiencing fast urbanization process. A direct result of urbanization is the sharp growth of population, which further increases the demands of housing. Thus high density of city is inevitable. In present high-rise tower blocks, except for staircases and necessary corridors, public space is greatly insufficient which has led to serious social problems. The aim of the paper is to improve people’s living quality through providing active public spaces learning from traditional Chinese agricultural settlements.Through field study, the authors find that fractal structure and some spatial characteristics in Chinese rural villages can effectively increase the chance of residents’ social activities. The transform from the structure of traditional Chinese settlements to the high-rise tower blocks creates a suitable place for people’s communication and increases the identity of a locality, which can greatly enhance the “root” feeling of local residents. We are more deeply aware of the importance of public space for people's social life. We hope to provide some reference for the design of public space in the high-rise tower blocks through this study.
