In this paper we introduce and apply a methodology to investigate the technical and power supply condition of
hybrid power supply system with PHS system, taking consideration of part load operational performance of
thermal power plant, the actual RES power generation and load profile in Kyushu, Japan. The optimization of
hybrid power supply system involves variation of efficiency for thermal power plant, various technical and
operational constraints and the supply-demand balance dispatch. A nonlinear optimization model is built to
evaluate the fuel-saving profits, providing optimally power generation mix and schedule strategies for the power
supplier. The effectiveness of the PHS implementation is confirmed by analyzing different operating scenarios via
varying RES penetrations and relative storage capacities. Based on the analysis of RES integration exploitation,
we argue that proper implementation of PHS can effectively decrease the overall fuel consumption. However, the
fuel-saving benefit of the hybrid system is a non-linear, it will become saturated with the increasing relatively
battery capacity especially under high RES penetration level.
