Abstract

In Korea, the population in the rural community sharply decreased due to the urbanization, and scale of schools in the rural area had become smaller and smaller. As a result, the government is continuously pushing forward the merging policy of small schools since 1982. However, a mere merging of number of students only repeated the vicious circle where a merged school becomes a small school and being merged once again. In order to hold students from leaving the rural area, the government started to actively invest on the merged schools and as one of the policies for this, government proposed a public boarding middle school policy which can solve the long-distance commute problem and reduce the private education expenses. However, there are only 2 public boarding middle schools in operation and many middle schools are still in the planning phase that the data materials on this are not enough. Therefore, this research tried to obtain the basic data necessary for planning public boarding middle schools in the rural community by conducting an investigation on current situation and satisfaction survey at 2 public boarding middle schools in operation.
According to the result of survey, the dormitory in the public boarding middle school of rural area needs the bedroom for rest and sleep, as well as spaces for care, communication, and culture. Male and female separation is essential for smooth management of students, a type of bedroom and the size of bathroom should be planned considering the life of the students, and studying space for 1 seat per person must be secured. In order to attract good teachers to rural school, the lodging for teachers is also essential, and this must be near the student’s dormitory for the student guidance while separated for the protection of the teacher’s private life.
