JAUE2020-030: Influence of Architectural Features on Chinese Aesthetic & Pleasure Judgment

Abstract

Architects should have a better understanding of the user's subjective feelings when designing buildings and use psychological, brain science, behavioral science, and other means to better support the design theoretically. Some features in architecture will affect the user's emotions and aesthetics. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the influence of ceiling height, openness, and contour on users' emotions and aesthetics through a series of experiments. In this research, an eye tracker was used to explore the subjects' observation trajectories and concerns on architectural pictures composed of different features. A total of 200 architectural space pictures in 8 groups were used in the experiment, with each picture containing 3 architectural features: ceiling height, openness, and contour. By rating the pleasure and beauty of each picture, we explored people's preferences for these architectural features. The results show that ceiling height and openness have a significant influence on Chinese people's pleasure and aesthetic judgment when examining the building. However, through a simple effect test, it was found that the contour only has a significant impact under certain circumstances. Regardless of the duration or color of the stimuli, the scores of pleasure and aesthetics always remain strongly correlated.
