Abstract

Most of the building structures have become larger, higher and diversified in their functionality recently. Accordingly, evacuation simulation-based life safety assessment has been implemented compulsorily. However, due to the lack of experimental or observatory data on occupants’ evacuation behaviours, the reliability of computer simulation tool has been questioned. In this situation, the study sought to develop a submodel on following instinct, a major human evacuation behavioural characteristic. To this end, people’s route choice patterns were investigated in evacuation event depending upon the existence of agent group which moved ahead. Survey questionnaires were produced on route choice and 367 people including 169 males and 198 females were surveyed.
