Abstract

The countryside has profound significance to China, but with the advancement of China's modernization, a
series of rural problems come one after another. As a carrier of residential buildings culture, courtyards also face
huge challenges. Taking the residential courtyards in western Zhejiang as the research object, using data survey
and literature review methods, 17 villages were selected. By analyzing the evolution process of courtyard
attributes such as enclosing methods and structures, the courtyards were explained in terms of cultural life,
production methods, family structure, etc. The evolutionary generation mechanism proposes an optimized strategy
for effectively retaining of the courtyards and provides reference opinions for the future development of
residential courtyards. The results show that the changes in cultural life, production methods and family structure
affect the spatial layout of residential courtyards, but the introduction of relevant policies can bring a greater
impact. Therefore, for the protection and renewal of rural residential courtyards, reasonable policies should be
adopted for more practical and effective guidance.
