Abstract

In Japan, wooden houses built using the conventional axis construction method are the mainstream. However, the use of lumber by the conventional-axle construction method is currently limited to a huge number of inventory types and a low yield rate of about 40% due to free design with no standardization of dimensions. Therefore, this study examines the consolidation of member dimensions and optimization of member lengths. The number of types of building-side member dimensions collected from data on houses constructed using the large panel construction method amounted to 9878. After performing a hierarchical cluster analysis on the collected data, the number of clusters was determined for each cross-sectional dimension with reference to the production lists of Japanese lumber mills, and the maximum value of each cluster was used as the member dimension after aggregation. These member dimensions were then used to examine combinations that would minimize the remaining lumber length for each cross-section. As a result of the combination study, the lumber lengths with the smallest residual lumber were found. Since only structural members were examined in this study, future studies will be conducted on the shingles as well
